Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Reserves in Third Quarter Amid Liquidity Push

Japanese treasury firm Metaplanet brings its bitcoin holdings to 44,000 BTC following a strategic sale and repurchase, while rolling out a new net interest income strategy.

Key takeaways

  • Metaplanet added a net 1,000 bitcoin in the third quarter, bringing its total holdings to 44,000 BTC valued at approximately $3.8 billion.
  • The Japanese firm temporarily sold and repurchased bitcoin to demonstrate liquidity and strengthen its credit profile.
  • The company also introduced a Net Interest Income Strategy focused on preferred securities issued by other bitcoin treasury firms.

Tokyo-listed Metaplanet expanded its corporate treasury during the third quarter, adding a net 1,000 bitcoin to bring its total reserves to 44,000 tokens. As of September 30, the firm's total bitcoin holdings were valued at approximately $3.8 billion.

During the quarter, the Japanese company executed a calculated sale and repurchase cycle. Metaplanet sold 10,000 bitcoin for roughly $789.2 million, achieving an average price of $78,925 per coin. It subsequently purchased 11,000 bitcoin for $948.7 million at an average price of $86,246.

Demonstrating Liquidity

Management temporarily held the proceeds from the initial sale in cash to prove its capability to cover outstanding interest-bearing debt, although those specific financial obligations were not repaid. Because the subsequent repurchase occurred at higher prices, the firm's overall cost basis shifted to approximately $4.33 billion, or an average of $98,454 per bitcoin.

Chief Executive Officer Simon Gerovich emphasized that the maneuvers reflect a broader corporate vision. The firm aims to establish itself as a leading financial institution focused on the digital asset in Asia, rather than merely accumulating the cryptocurrency.

New Income Strategies

Alongside its treasury updates, Metaplanet unveiled a Net Interest Income Strategy. The initiative targets investments primarily in preferred securities issued by other bitcoin treasury companies. The firm plans to allocate between 10% and 15% of its total assets to these instruments, seeking returns that exceed its funding costs to service ongoing obligations and fund further token acquisitions.

Meanwhile, the company's options-based Bitcoin Income Generation business experienced a slowdown. Q3 revenue dropped to approximately $5.4 million, marking a 51% decline from the second quarter and a 65% decrease year over year. Despite the quarterly drop, nine-month revenue reached approximately $35.2 million, extending the firm's streak of consecutive revenue-generating quarters to eight.

Why it matters

Corporate adoption of digital assets has increasingly transformed balance sheets, with firms testing innovative mechanisms to manage liquidity and service debt. Metaplanet's strategy highlights how publicly traded entities utilize treasury assets not just as a store of value, but as a flexible financial instrument to project creditworthiness and explore secondary revenue streams.

What to watch

Observers will monitor whether Metaplanet successfully scales its new Net Interest Income Strategy and whether its preferred securities investments generate sufficient returns to offset funding costs. Market participants will also track the ongoing performance of the company's options-based income generation unit as broader macroeconomic conditions influence digital asset markets.
