Solana Introduces Institutional Settlement Tool With J.P. Morgan Input

The Solana Foundation has launched an open-source delivery-versus-payment program aimed at streamlining institutional asset settlement on public blockchains.

Key takeaways

  • The Solana Foundation unveiled an open-source delivery-versus-payment program called Solana DvP.
  • J.P. Morgan provided institutional expertise to help shape the design of the new settlement tool.
  • The system enables atomic settlement within seconds, bypassing traditional multi-day clearing cycles.

The Solana Foundation is making a concerted push into institutional finance by launching an open-source program designed to let major banks settle trades on its network. Announced on Monday, the tool is called Solana DvP and serves as an open-source escrow program.

It provides financial institutions with a standardized application programming interface for delivery-versus-payment settlement. This process functions as the foundational mechanism ensuring that an asset and its corresponding payment change hands simultaneously.

Streamlining Traditional Settlement

Released under the permissive MIT license, the initiative brings robust settlement guarantees to public blockchain infrastructure. Rather than relying on bespoke smart contracts tailored for individual institutional trades, the program offers a reusable industry standard.

The Solana Foundation noted that J.P. Morgan provided crucial input regarding institutional settlement practices to help shape the system's design. Traditional delivery-versus-payment operations typically route through a complex multi-day chain involving clearinghouses, depositories, and custodians that can tie up capital for up to two days.

Solana DvP compresses this multi-day process into a single atomic transaction. In an atomic transaction, both legs of the trade settle concurrently or the trade fails entirely.

Eradicating Counterparty Risk

"Atomic settlement removes counterparty risk that is inherent in traditional finance," said Catherine Gu, the foundation's head of product for digital assets. She added that the framework delivers a single open standard offering transaction finality in seconds rather than days.

Rhodel D'souza, J.P. Morgan's head of markets digital assets, echoed this sentiment. He stated that a shared, open standard for atomic delivery-versus-payment represents the exact type of foundational infrastructure required by institutional market participants.

The newly released program supports SPL Token and Token-2022 standards. This includes regulated issuer extensions such as permanent delegate capabilities, pausable tokens, and transfer hooks, alongside completed external security audits.

Why it matters

The launch arrives as Solana secures growing traction among major financial institutions exploring tokenized real-world assets. BlackRock introduced a tokenized money market fund in August to manage stablecoin reserves, recording ownership on Solana alongside Ethereum. Kraken has also utilized the network to distribute tokenized U.S. stocks to international customers via its xStocks offering.

These developments position Solana as a prominent venue for tokenized equities. Introducing standardized settlement infrastructure aims to solidify this standing by offering regulated participants a trusted environment for on-chain execution.

What to watch

Moving forward, the Solana Foundation plans to integrate privacy features into the architecture to ensure sensitive institutional settlements remain confidential. Observers will monitor whether additional major financial institutions adopt the open-source DvP standard for live transactions.
