Strategy Maintains Unassailable Edge Over Rival Bitcoin Treasuries, Says Ammous

Economist Saifedean Ammous argues that Michael Saylor’s firm holds an insurmountable advantage in scale and cash reserves over competing corporate vehicles.

Key takeaways

  • Strategy holds the world's largest corporate Bitcoin treasury with 847,666 BTC acquired for $63.95 billion.
  • Economist Saifedean Ammous notes that Strategy's massive holdings allow it to secure lower borrowing rates than smaller rivals.
  • Ammous remains cautious on corporate wrappers, stating he ultimately favors holding the underlying cryptocurrency directly.

Corporate entities attempting to build business models around accumulating digital assets may find it increasingly difficult to challenge Michael Saylor’s Strategy. According to economist and author Saifedean Ammous, the firm's sheer scale and robust cash reserves create a wide competitive moat that smaller treasury competitors will struggle to cross.

Speaking on a recent episode of Cointelegraph's Proof of Thesis, Ammous expressed skepticism regarding alternative vehicles in the space. He stated that he sees little compelling rationale for investors to back corporate Bitcoin treasury firms other than Strategy.

According to an 8-K filing, Strategy commands the globe's largest corporate Bitcoin reserve. The company holds 847,666 BTC, which it acquired for a total of $63.95 billion. Furthermore, the firm maintains a $5.02 billion US dollar reserve specifically designed to cover debt interest and preferred stock dividends.

The Advantage of Scale

Strategy's immense cryptocurrency holdings translate into direct financial advantages. Ammous points out that these massive reserves allow the company to borrow capital at lower rates than its smaller peers. This structural benefit reinforces its dominant position within the corporate treasury landscape.

The firm's financing strategy faced intense scrutiny earlier in the year when Bitcoin prices dipped below $60,000. During that period, Strategy's STRC preferred stock traded significantly below its $100 target price.

To navigate the downturn, management raised the annual dividend rate on STRC to 12 percent, repurchased shares, and reinforced its cash buffer. The company even sold a portion of its Bitcoin holdings to fund these measures before eventually pivoting back to accumulation.

Managing Risk and Volatility

Despite past market stress, Ammous believes the company is well-insulated against future turbulence. He noted that even a severe market drawdown would leave the firm in a manageable position due to its substantial cash on hand for ongoing payments.

Beyond specialized treasury firms, Ammous suggested that traditional operating businesses with positive cash flow can successfully utilize Bitcoin as a long-term reserve asset. However, he drew a firm line between surplus capital allocations and the liquid cash required for daily, weekly, and monthly operational needs.

Why it matters

While Ammous acknowledges Strategy's operational strength, he maintains a cautious stance on corporate wrappers. He advises that investing in such entities carries inherent risks and notes a personal preference for holding Bitcoin directly.

Looking at broader market dynamics, the economist suggested that Bitcoin has likely established a cyclical bottom, though transient crashes remain possible. He anticipates that the ongoing market cycle could culminate in a peak around 2029, driven by predominantly upward price action.

What to watch

Market observers should monitor how smaller corporate treasuries adapt their financing models to compete with industry leaders. Additionally, broader institutional participation may accelerate if diminishing volatility makes the asset class more palatable to large asset managers during upcoming market cycles.
